Known for giving Florida its name in 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon's expeditions included Charlotte Harbor. Legend says he returned here in 1521, whereupon he was wounded by a Calusa arrow and died shortly thereafter in Havana, Cuba.
