Driving in the Southwest

Driving

We purchased ‘Buckley’ in the Grand Canyon gift shop. He became our travel buddy and kept Christine safe from the thunder and lightning on the nights that we slept in the van. It turns out that late August is monsoon season in the desert! Christine and I are no strangers to road trips, but this was certainly the longest one that we have ever done. The southwest desert highways are fast, though, and you can cover a lot of ground in a well air-conditioned car. Arizona, in particular, has large open spaces with long stretches of road. You can pull over to the side of the road and wait half an hour before the next car drives by. It was in spots like these that we started to feel like we were in a western film.
