Simply South Dakota. Natural beauty. Homespun charm. Rural and Native American heritage. Ethnic festivals. Community events. Family attractions. Your real South Dakota adventure begins here.

Every landmark has a story to tell, from the quartzite cliffs of Palisades State Park to the falls of the Big Sioux River to the picturesque bluffs of the “Wild and Scenic” Missouri National Recreational River. Peaceful scenes, from canoes on a lazy river to shady campsites and woodland trails, will greet you. The region is an outdoor playground your whole family will enjoy. Threshing bees to colourful ethnic festivals capture the spirit of the people.

The region’s largest city, Sioux Falls, named for the falls of the Big Sioux River, offers a wide variety of historical museums, art galleries and theatres, as well as exceptional shopping and dining.

Follow the Wine Trail through beautiful rolling hills and farm country and taste the flavours of the region. Climb to new heights and experience rock climbing for a different perspective on the beautiful red quartzite pinnacles and 50 foot vertical cliffs lining Split Rock River. A techno-treasure hunt, geocaching can be a family adventure around the region.

Pick your favourite mode of transportation: bicycle, horse ride, cross-country skis, a snowmobile or your own two feet to explore the extensive trail systems throughout the region.

Fresh air and sunshine call you to leave creature comforts by the wayside and get back home to nature. From primitive tent sites to full service resort accommodations, Southeast South Dakota parks and campgrounds are waiting for you.

With more than 175 natural and man-made lakes and three major rivers, every day can be a new adventure. The “Mighty Mo” is also the major North American migratory waterfowl flyway, making it a favourite destination for bird lovers. More than 300 species of birds may be observed among 33 points along our Birding Trail.

For birds of another feather, come for the hunt of a lifetime. Like nowhere else, our state bird, the Chinese Ring-necked Pheasant, thrives in the habitat provided by Southeast South Dakota’s landscape. Pheasant season opens mid-October with hunters flocking to the area painting the landscape in hunter orange. But don’t be concerned, there are far more pheasants than your wildest imagination.

If fishing is your preference, you’ll find South Dakota’s fishing season never closes, so you can truly have some “reel” fun. You will be welcome year round with open seasons on most species of fish, including two options for paddle-fishing, spring archery or fall snagging season, both on the Missouri River downstream from Gavin’s Point Dam. For the true sportsman with a warm disposition and a good down parka, ice fishing can be a great relief to cabin fever.

Retrace the steps of Lewis & Clark. The Corps of Discovery explored this area 200 years ago. Their journals tell of their exploration of this region with new adventure at every turn.
