Salt Lake City: The Gems of Utah’s Capital

By Meimei Wu

Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah in the western United States, is a historic and dynamic city. Not only is it an international gateway to all the other activities found in Utah, Salt Lake City's rich museums, large shopping centers and colorful city life have also deeply amazed me. It all made me wish I didn't have to leave and that I had more time to spend here.

Two Cultural Icons of the City

There are two cultural icons in Salt Lake City that you can’t miss. One is The Natural History Museum of Utah, which was founded in 1963. Its location in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains means you will have an amazing panoramic view from there. There are more than 5,000 artifacts including all kinds of dinosaur fossils, taking me back on a journey to the ancient age of these giants. There’s a window into the scientists’ studio to view them at work, a sand box for kids to dig for fossils and even a coffee shop; I could spend my whole day here!

The other icon is The Leonardo in downtown Salt Lake City. If you’re exploring Utah with your kids, I definitely recommend this museum for its hands-on laboratories for math, science and art. Kids can experiment with the everyday things that happen in life for themselves. You will find that your kids have many questions about what they see here. Don't worry, the friendly staff will explain it to them one by one.

Two Attractive Shopping Centers

For upscale open-air shopping, head to City Creek Shopping Center in downtown Salt Lake City, one of the largest mixed-use urban renewal projects in the U.S. They have many stores such as Nordstrom’s, Macy's, Tiffany & Co, Michael Kors, Coach, Tumi and more than 100 more, as well as diverse dining options.

Nearby Tanger Outlets in Park City also offers a wide range of luxury retailers at incredible discount prices. It has loads of factory outlets, so I was fully immersed in a shopping paradise!

Dining and Attractions

Before we headed back to Salt Lake City, we wandered Main Street in Park City, stopped by some independent boutiques and enjoyed locally owned restaurants. And if you’re looking for a unique attraction here, I recommend visiting the Utah Olympic Park. There are gigantic bobsleds and ski jumps, zip lines, an obstacle course and plenty more. It’s a fantastic outdoor activity in Park City!

Back in Salt Lake City, we didn’t need to worry about finding the right restaurant. There are all kinds of cuisines and different styles of bars, some accompanied by music so you can enjoy dancing with friends! It is definitely a great fun place to hang out and meet new people.

Rich museums, tempting shopping centers, colorful nightlife… What are you waiting for? The Salt Lake City area of Utah is definitely worth a visit!
