The Golden Isles, Georgia: Elegant Accommodations and Shopping

By Serena Lorien

Conveniently located south of Savannah and just 30 minutes from the Florida-Georgia state line is the city of Brunswick with its beautiful barrier islands: St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island and Sea Island, collectively known as the Golden Isles. On my recent holiday, I discovered that these islands many ways to indulge with adorable shops, delicious restaurants and lavish accommodation.

First-Class Lodging on Sea Island

An exclusive resort hotel on Sea Island is the five-star Cloister at Sea Island. Rich with history and elegance, it offers unbelievable rooms, activities for the whole family, wellness programmes and, of course, golf. The manicured lawns, the generous complex and the magical stillness allow you to let your soul take a rest and forget the daily grind. For the utmost in dining, the Georgian Room is the place to dine – it’s Georgia’s only Forbes Five-star restaurant.

For ultimate privacy, The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club is it. Not only is there world-glass golf, but 24-hour butler service guarantees a definitive luxury experience. No wonder: The Lodge has earned the Forbes Five-star rating and the coveted AAA Five-Diamond Award every year since 2001.

Jekyll Island Club Hotel

Moving on to the southern-most island of the Golden Isles, Jekyll Island offers visitors the incredible Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Originally one of the most exclusive private clubs in the world, its members included names such as William Rockefeller, William K. Vanderbilt, Joseph Pulitzer and J.P. Morgan. Ten miles of sandy beaches, golf, tennis, 20 miles of bike trails and a fascinating National Historic Landmark District are just some of the things offered at this legendary property.

Shopping and Dining on St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island is the largest barrier island in the Golden Isles; it lies across pristine stretches of marshland and has some of the best shopping and award-winning dining options on the Georgia coast, as well as natural beauty, sandy beaches, a fishing pier, a cinema and theatre.

One thing you notice upon your arrival to St. Simons Island is that almost all of the shops and restaurants are family-owned businesses rather than big chains. This is something I am always glad to see. The friendliness and level of care from the staff is a great reflection of this.

If shopping makes you hungry, you should visit Bennie’s Red Barn. The oldest restaurant on St. Simons Island has its inspiration in Germany, as the founder had sought shelter in a German barn as a soldier in World War II. The food was amazing and the service excellent as well.

The Golden Isles offers an idyllic retreat for those looking for a peaceful getaway with quaint shopping, fantastic restaurants and beautiful lodging options. Come and experience everything these wonderful islands have to offer.
