Glenwood Springs, Colorado: Wintertime Fun
By Lucie Laura
When the sun rises behind the snow-capped peaks of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and the gorges glow a reddish hue, Glenwood Springs shows its most beautiful side. When I see it for the first time, I can’t wait to explore this exciting town, located between Vail and Aspen. Because of the town’s incredible attractions and natural wonders, it’s no surprise that Glenwood Springs has been named “the most fun town in America!”
Snow Sports in the White River National Forest
I start off at the Sunlight Mountain Resort in White River National Forest. Since Glenwood Springs is only 60 miles southwest of Vail and 43 miles north of Aspen, it’s a perfect base to discover these two exclusive cities and enjoy the most popular ski region in the country at much more affordable prices. Sunlight Mountain Resort is perfect for families – all its 67 runs meet at the base area so no one can get lost. Here you will find everything your winter heart desires: downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and, of course, breathtaking views
Winter Adventures With Postcard Views
At the base station, I meet the friendly owner of Glenwood Adventure Company. The warmth of the people here in Glenwood Springs is remarkable, and I feel right at home. He invites me on a snowmobile ride, and, after a short car ride, we whiz through the valleys surrounding Glenwood Springs on snowmobiles. Once again, the panoramic views remind me of postcards! If you you’re seeking a little thrill while exploring the natural wonders, you’ve got many options: ATV rides, Segway tours or whitewater kayaking.
Amusement Park in the Clouds Open Year Round
Next, under a clear blue sky, I ride up to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in a gondola. Speaking of the weather…thanks to its southwestern location, Glenwood Springs enjoys an average of 300 sunny days a year. Located at 1.2 miles above sea level, Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park features a roller coaster, an alpine coaster, great activities, a café with panoramic views and, of course, the eponymous caves, which extend more than three miles.
Pure Relaxation in the World Famous Glenwood Hot Springs
After so much adventure and exercise, it’s time for some relaxation. There's no better way to unwind than a visit to the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. The Glenwood Hot Springs is the largest mineral hot springs pool in the world. The Ute Indians believed the Hot Springs possessed magical, therapeutic powers and considered the area sacred. Attracting visitors from all over the world for over 125 years, it is one of the most popular destinations in Colorado.
Relaxation naturally includes good food and entertainment – at the Glenwood Vaudeville Revue you get both! The professional performers and the great food guarantee an absolutely unforgettable evening.
With beautiful wilderness, a variety of leisure activities, good food and great entertainment, Glenwood Springs is a true Colorado gem!
