Aspen: The Ski and Après Ski Experience

By Karen Slosaski

Located in the beautiful state of Colorado, Aspen/Snowmass is an enchanting ski destination that combines glamour with action sports and other mountain activities. The cosmopolitan town of Aspen, though relatively small, attracts thousands of tourists each year due to its trendy, sophisticated atmosphere.

Neighbouring Snowmass is internationally recognized for as an irresistible destination for adventurous travellers who love mountain sports. This perfect harmony of luxury and fun is what makes Aspen/Snowmass a multicultural, year-round destination filled with exciting activities. There is no way to not enjoy this wonderful place!

Four Mountains, One Great Skiing Destination
When I think of Aspen/Snowmass in winter, I picture a beautiful landscape, much like a living postcard, always changing with the snowfall and diverse terrain. Aspen Skiing Company operates four ski areas in this incredible landscape: Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. This includes thousands of acres of land to ski and snowboard, as well as countless other activities, restaurants with fabulous views and an exciting nightlife.

What a beautiful place to learn to ski! You can receive the most cutting-edge skiing and snowboarding instruction here with a strong emphasis on safety. At Elk Camp Meadows in Snowmass, children as young as two and a half years old can learn to ski at the various kids’ programs available. For adults, there also different levels of instruction, available in various languages.

One thing that caught my attention was the Challenge Aspen Program, which offers access throughout the year for anyone older than four with physical or cognitive disabilities. It was impressive to see how inspiring and rewarding adaptive skiing was for a disabled visitor who did not let his physical conditions limit his desire to glide down the beautiful snowy mountains. No one is left out!

Après Ski: Dining, Culture and Art

When staying in Aspen, you’ll be quick to pick up some new vocabulary, including “après” – the most commonly used ski term often heard around 5 p.m., when you’re tired after a long day on the slopes and it’s time to unwind. “Après,” French for “after,” is the frequently used term for relaxing by the fireplace, enjoying good conversations over happy hour drinks, and almost anything that epitomizes the “good life” in Aspen.

In downtown Aspen, luxury surrounds you, from original art galleries on every corner, each featuring unique styles and exciting talent to famous name brands and high-end boutiques. What I enjoyed most about après in Aspen was its charming downtown and its healthy and delicious dining choices. Many ingredients used in restaurants are fresh, organic and harvested nearby.

I lived the après experience at The Limelight – a hotel with a lively and friendly lounge with live music, wood-fired pizza, cocktails made with love, and an attractive fireplace that gave me the warmest memories during my stay in Aspen – literally! Another sophisticated restaurant that impressed me with its hospitality and social scene was the restaurant Element 47, located in the Little Nell Hotel, a five-star hotel with a romantic ambience.

Thrilling snow sports, a friendly social scene, art and incredible dining all sum up this place and offer plenty of options for your enjoyment. Make plans to visit for yourself soon!
